SCHALLER, the director of science for the Wildlife Conservation Society in New York, is the author of a dozen books including The Year of the Gorilla, The Serengeti Lion, Stones of Silence, and The Last Panda. He is currently working with Tibetan and Chinese scientists to create the first survey ever of wildlife on the Tibetan plateau.
