Es ist schon spät am Abend, als die blutjunge Carolin Hamer völlig aufgelöst vor der Praxis des erfolgreichen Frauenarztes Dr. Lothar Dambacher steht. Der erfahrene Mediziner erkennt sofort, dass das Mädchen nahe an einem Zusammenbruch ist, und er ahnt auch schon, was die Gründe dafür sind. Sie erwartet ein Baby - und der Vater hat sich aus dem Staub gemacht.
Schweren Herzens lässt Dr. Lothar Dambacher das zutiefst unglückliche Mädchen nach der Untersuchung gehen, denn sein Gefühl sagt ihm, dass Carolin in ihrer derzeitigen Situation eine große Dummheit begehen könnte. Doch auch noch Tage später denkt der Mediziner ununterbrochen an das Mädchen und fragt sich, wie es ihm wohl geht. Er bemerkt überhaupt nicht, wie sehr seine Ehefrau unter der immer größer werdenden Distanz und der Einsamkeit leidet, bis Frau Elisabeth ihn eines Tages zur Rede stellt und ihn bittet: "Gib mich frei!"
