Acerca deste livro eletrónico

A new translation of Denis Diderot's 1765 Essay on Painting from the original French manuscript into American English. This edition contains an afterword by the translator on Diderot's philosophic legacy, a timeline of his works and life, and a glossary of philosophic terminology utilized in his writings. This essay was influential in the field of Aesthetics. Hegel read this work, and largely agreed with Goethe's assessment of it. "Goethe already says in his notes to the translation of Diderot's Versuch über die Malerei: "One by no means admits that it is easier to make a weak coloring more harmonious than a strong one; but admittedly, if the coloring is strong, if colors appear vivid, then the eye also feels harmony and disharmony much more vividly; but if one needs the colors weakened, some bright, others mixed, others soiled in the picture, then admittedly no one knows whether he sees a harmonious or disharmonious picture; but that one knows at most to say that it is ineffective, that it is insignificant." -Hegel in his Lectures on Aesthetics

Acerca do autor

A friend of Rousseau, Diderot was an Enlightenment writer and Philosopher. Diderot's other works spanned a wide range of genres, including novels, scientific treatises, and art criticism. His novel "Jacques the Fatalist" explores themes of determinism and free will, while "Rameau's Nephew" is a dialogic exploration of moral relativism and the nature of genius. In his art criticism, notably his writings on the Salons (the official art exhibitions in Paris), Diderot was pioneering, blending detailed descriptions with broader philosophical reflections on art and aesthetics.
