Der Roman spielt auf den Gebieten des heutigen Estland und Lettland. Die Auseinandersetzungen zwischen den dort beheimateten Letten und Esten auf der einen Seite und den deutschstämmigen Bewohnern auf der anderen Seite, bilden den Hintergrund des Romans. Die slawischen Bewohner (Esten und Letten) sympathisieren mit dem russuschen Zaren, gegen den sich die deutschstämmigen Bewohner im Untergrund organisieren.
