Pubblicata nel 1757 e ampliata nel 1759, l’Inchiesta sul bello e il sublime di Edmund Burke costituisce l’approdo della riflessione primosettecentesca sul “sublime” e, al tempo stesso, il punto di partenza di una complessa trama teorica e culturale che si dipana fino ai nostri tempi. Riprendendo infatti idee e analisi maturate nel corso di mezzo secolo (da Dennis a Addison, da Shaftesbury a Hume), Burke le riarticola in un quadro teorico di forte originalità che rimarrà classico fino alla Critica del Giudizio di Kant. Il bello come ciò che è ben formato ed esteticamente gradevole, il sublime come ciò che ha il potere di costringerci a fare qualcosa e di distruggerci. Nel preferire il sublime al bello, Burke segna in questo trattato il passaggio dal neoclassicismo al Romanticismo.
