Di fatto, leggendo i tre grandi saggi su Frost, Hardy e Rilke – o la memorabile «Lettera a Orazio» – che fanno da perno al libro, risulta difficile immaginare un grado ulteriore di comprensione: sono prove stupefacenti di come si possa illuminare un testo quasi aderendo alla tensione muscolare della mano del poeta che scrive. Ma parlare di questi autori, per Brodskij, ha sempre significato parlare di tutto e del tutto, poiché per lui la poesia era «l’unica assicurazione disponibile contro la volgarità del cuore umano».
