Als die Komödianten weiterziehen, bringt Alba Nardini aus Eifersucht ihren Geliebten, den lyrischen Tenor Nello Gennari und darauf sich selber um. Palestrina, ein Städtchen südöstlich von Rom in der Campagna Romana, das Heinrich Mann 1895 bis 1898 kennenlernte, diente als Modell für die kleine Stadt.
