Das Buch erschien 1889 im Verlag Edgar Pierson in Dresden und erreichte innerhalb kurzer Zeit eine überragende Bekanntheit und Verbreitung. Bertha Sophia Felicita Freifrau von Suttner (* 9. Juni 1843 in Prag, geborene Gräfin Kinsky von Wchinitz und Tettau; † 21. Juni 1914 in Wien Innere Stadt, Zedlitzgasse 7) war eine österreichische Pazifistin, Friedensforscherin und Schriftstellerin. Sie wurde 1905 als erste Frau mit dem Friedensnobelpreis ausgezeichnet.
