About this ebook

An ever-present barrel of apples at the back door and the daily aroma of fresh bread. Weekly card games, stolen chickens, honky-tonks and a frigid one-room schoolhouse. Tradition and Family. Welcome to 1950s Paradise, Newfoundland. Growing up as one of 17 children, Pennell transports us back to a then little village full of love, adventure, mischief and colourful characters. In this love letter to his hometown, Pennell captures the significant changes over the decades and shows us that Paradise really was a little piece of heaven on earth.

About the author

The author, Ches Pennell, is an expert on all things Paradise having grown up in one of the community’s most prominent families. Paradise, Newfoundland...When I Walked Its Gravel Road is a compilation of precious and humorous recollections which need to be preserved.

Apart from writing, Ches is still hands on in his 50-year contracting business and is quite active in the chain of franchises owned and operated by sons, Bob and Bert. His father, Walter, would be proud to see that his work ethic has lived on through them.
