First published in 1872, Carmilla is a classic gothic novella and one of the earliest examples of vampire fiction.
Fast-paced and gripping, the story follows the protagonist Laura, who lives in a secluded castle in the woods with her father. One day, a carriage accident brings a young woman named Carmilla into their lives, and she is taken in as a guest. As time goes on, Laura becomes increasingly drawn to Carmilla, despite her strange behavior and the eerie occurrences happening in the castle. As their relationship deepens, Laura begins to suspect that Carmilla may not be who she seems, and that her presence may be linked to a series of mysterious deaths in the surrounding area.
Carmilla has had a significant influence on the image of the vampire in popular culture, especially in its depiction of same-sex desire. The novel's depiction of the relationship between Carmilla and Laura, which is both sensual and dangerous, was considered subversive for its time and Carmilla is now considered the original prototype for the lesbian vampire. Sheridan Le Fanu was born in Dublin in 1814. His father, Thomas Le Fanu, was a clergyman with the Church of Ireland, and their family struggled financially as conflicts between the Church and the public arose. Le Fanu eventually chose to study law at Trinity College in Dublin but soon abandoned law to pursue writing full-time, contributing a myriad of short stories to the Dublin University Magazine. Le Fanu's literary career expanded exponentially with the publication of several sensationalist horror novels in the 1860s and beyond. In just eight years, Le Fanu contributed twelve short novels to the popular genre, including the gothic mystery Uncle Silas. With a penchant for all things macabre and subtly supernatural, his work quickly ascended the ranks of horror fiction.
