Interesting premise and compelling characters, but the ending felt rather anticlimactic to me. Also, that corset hatred had me rolling my eyes. The whole 'corsets were death traps' thing really wasn't true at all. Unless a women was tight lacing- an uncommon practice- then a corset made/worn properly shouldn't cause any pain or issues breathing to a healthy person. If you can't take in a full breath while wearing a corset, then you must have an underlying issue, the corset is being worn too tight or it's too small altogether. The average woman was not walking around in a tight laced corset, struggling to breath or move, because, gasp, they also aren't really all that restrictive either. Even working women, domestics, factory workers, farmers, ect, wore corsets daily without issue. They were a combination of bras/shapewear/support for skirts made of heavy frabrics. They weren't part of patriarchal oppression. They were designed by women, for women.

I've read this series multiple times and I always enjoy it. I love a good mystery book. The series gets better and better with each book, and the characters develop nicely. I love that it's set in historical London. If you've only read the first I highly recommend going on to the second.

Multiple Mysteries This book is a page turner from the moment you begin reading. Character development is thorough and left this reader feeling like the characters came to life on the page. One mystery after another is slowly revealed as we learn more about the main character, Charlie, who, we find out, has been hiding something very important. When finally the mysterious V.F. was revealed I was happily surprised and gratified how well things began to be tied together. Read this as soon as you can. This is the beginning of another great series by C.J. Archer; personally I can’t wait.

C.J. Archer has loved history and books for as long as she can remember and feels fortunate that she found a way to combine the two. She has at various times worked as a librarian, IT support person and technical writer but in her heart has always been a fiction writer.
