About this ebook

Inara spent two hundred years as a devoted shadow to her mother, sacrificing everything to do what was best for their family. She cared for her mother dearly, but love and hate aren’t opposites. Sometimes the difference between them is thinner than the edge of a blade.

When the love of Inara’s life finally appears, it’s as glorious as she imagined it would be. But a single mistake made long ago can have far-reaching consequences. Even though she wants to do the right thing, Inara’s options shrink more with each passing day. Can she rectify her one misstep, or will it drive her off the side of a cliff from which there is no return?

Going into this book I wasn't sure how I would feel about a book from Inara's point of view. Let me just say, that this ended up being one of the best books in the series! I read most of it in one night, and because I just couldn't put it down, I ended up not going to sleep until 3 0'clock in the morning! Part of the reason for that is the fact that so many things are revealed in this book that I've been waiting for answers for. Another part is that I genuinely liked Inara for most of the book. And of course there is always the fact that Bridget Baker does such a good job at sucking me into her stories. The scope of this book is huge. Many years are covered, and we get so much background on Inara and some of the other characters. I loved that about the book. I thought Inara's character was well developed and it made sense why she made all the choices she made, even if I didn't agree with all of them. I understood how she got from point A to point B in her life, and I had sympathy for her up to a point. My one little quibble is the insta-love thing that happens at one point in the book. I do need to add that I have since finished this series, and after reading the next book and learning more about how the berserker thing works and how certain feelings can happen for certain reasons, the insta-love made more sense, but at the time I read this I just didn't understand it, and I spent a good part of the book in disbelief. Despite that, I feel like overall this was an excellent book, and after finishing it I had to immediately start the next one!

This is my favorite series by this author! It just keeps dragging you deeper in as you get to know each character more. Inara has always been one of Chancery's biggest supporters, but she has secrets. She's doesn't want to be a bad person, but Inara's secrets have had major consequences. In attempt to hide who she is, she's making horrible judgement calls and major mistakes and she can't seem to stop. Warning... it ends in a cliff hanger. Be prepared to run and buy book 7 as soon as you finish this! Book 7 wasn't out when I finished, so I had to wait. It was a rough couple weeks!

Wow… Inara… Just, wow… I did not see any of this coming. It’s heartbreaking on so many levels. As with the others, when you get the story from her point of view, so much makes sense. Having the benefit of knowing the future and a bit of the past, I know she is making so many irreparable bad decisions, but in the moment can see why she made them. Love makes you blind and it’s not always good. And Enora is really an awful mother until she gets to Chancery!

About the author

Bridget is a lawyer turned novelist who loves her husband (every day) and all five of her kids (most days). She has three goofy horses, one very busy dog, two spoiled barn cats, two lion’s head rabbits, and more chickens than she cares to admit. She makes cookies waaaaaay too often, and believes they should be their own food group. In an attempt to level the scales between consumption and exertion, she kickboxes every day. So if you don’t like her books, her kids, or her cookies, maybe don’t tell her in person.
