'This book is a refreshing change. The author is clearly not hemmed by the straight jacket of his discipline – economics. Rather from the perspective of an economist he also seeks insights from various disciplines, sociology, psychology, anthropology, marketing and cultural studies to provide an alternative economic analysis of consumption – the engine of our global economy. As a non-economist with a background in psychology and education I found this well written, authoritative book a fascinating read, accessible and relevant to economists and non-economists alike. I applaud an academic who attempts to give a wider audience the ‘big’ picture on a subject. Reading between the lines I believe he is aware of the ontological and epistemological narrowness of mainstream economics; this book is the work of a modern day renaissance man.'
