Through all the long cold hours of the Norland night the Martian had not moved nor spoken. At dusk of the day before Eric John Stark had brought him into the ruined tower and laid him down, wrapped in blankets, on the snow. He had built a fire of dead brush, and since then the two men had waited, alone in the vast wasteland that girdles the polar cap of Mars.

Si Leigh Brackett est mondialement connue pour avoir scénarisé des films aussi célèbres que « Le Grand sommeil » (coécrit avec William Faulkner), « Rio Bravo » ou encore « L'Empire contre-attaque », celle qui fut la compagne d'un des plus grands auteurs de l'Âge d'Or, Edmond Hamilton, demeure avant tout une romancière de tout premier plan qui a donné ses lettres de noblesse à la science fantasy. Si son premier roman, « No Good From a Corpse » (1944) relève du roman noir à la Raymond Chandler, elle rédige dans le même temps des nouvelles de science-fiction, et donne naissance en 1949 à Eric John Stark (dont les aventures sont à paraître au Bélial’ dans le « Grand Livre de Stark ». Dans le « Grand Livre de Mars », Leigh Brackett évoque la planète rouge avec une puissance poétique digne de Ray Bradbury, dont elle fut l'amie et la confidente alors qu'il rédigeait les « Chroniques martiennes ». Elle a de fait influencé des générations d'écrivains, au premier rang desquels Michael Moorcock, qui reconnaît chez cette grande dame des littératures de genre l'une de ses inspirations fondatrices.
