His epic works 'War and Peace' (1869) and 'Anna Karenina' (1877) are celebrated for their intricate character development and profound understanding of human nature. Tolstoy's moral and spiritual inquiries led him to adopt a Christian anarchist and pacifist stance, which is reflected in his later works, including 'Bethink Yourselves!' written in 1904 in response to the Russo-Japanese War.
