With her boardinghouse tenants as advisors, she launches her own investigation, putting her and her friend Lulu right in the middle of a band of bootleggers who don't like nosy secretaries or their friends. Now, Mercy needs to save herself and Lulu before they both wind up floating in a Venice canal.

An entertaining mystery, I found this novel light-hearted, and yet true to the era in which it is written. Mercy Allcutt is a woman of privilege, but she struggles to find a compromise between the upbringing she has had and the reality of her present-day endeavors to hold down a job and write her novel. Her boss, P.I. Ernie Templeton, is protective of her but is also frustrated as trouble seems to find her. Witnessing a murder is one thing, but when the body disappears, Mercy is desperate to prove that she is not mistaken about what she saw. As events unfold, coincidences escalate, bringing Mercy into the cross-hairs of the killer. The story concludes on a very satisfactory note, giving Mercy the credit she deserves and the perpetrators their just deserts. I received a copy of this novel as a gift and this is my honest and voluntary review.

Award-winning author Alice Duncan lives with a herd of wild dachshunds (enriched from time to time with fosterees from New Mexico Dachshund Rescue) in Roswell, New Mexico.
