Mark fue un pintor, un artista. Me parece que es el primer paisajista de la historia del país… el primero que capturó al aire libre, con esbozos a lápiz coloreados enseguida con acuarela —método bastante literal—, lo que estaba delante de sus ojos y la luz que lo bañaba. Admitiendo un ligero tinte romántico —trópico benigno, bello, tranquilo, sencillo—, no tuvo más preocupación. Por eso convence tanto.

Hijo de padres ingleses vinculados al servicio consular del Imperio Británico, E. W. Mark fue cónsul general encargado de Inglaterra en Bogotá a mediados del siglo XIX. Pintor aficionado, dejó un testimonio gráfico insustituible del país de aquel entonces.
