Toate poveştile istorisite de Şeherezada în 1001 de nopţi se leagă una de alta, fiecare decurge din cea precedentă: spre sfârşitul poveştii unul din personaje începe să spună o nouă poveste, în care unul din noile personaje, către sfârşit începe şi el o altă poveste ş. a. m. d.... Opera aceasta a fost cunoscută mai întîi prin adaptarea francezului Antoine Galland, apărută în 1704. Cea mai bună traducere - şi completă - într-o limbă europeană este cea publicată în 1904 a lui Mardrus, în 18 volume.
La noi, cea dintâi versiune este cea apărută în prima jumătate a secolului 19, a lui Ion Barac, în 8 volume. O mie şi una de nopţi nu este nici tipic arabă, nici cea mai valoroasă operă a literaturii arabe. Cea mai veche urmă cunoscută a acestei opere este cuprinsă într-un fragment scurt de pe un papirus din secolul al IX-lea, scris într-o versiune arabă. Locul unde materia epică a operei a căpătat dezvoltare şi amploare a fost teritoriul actualului Irak; de unde, acest patrimoniu narativ a migrat şi a fost considerabil amplificat în Egiptul arab.
