Malerman's prose is slow, lingering on details and painting tableaus rather than propelling the action forward, but it works in his favour for this book. Harrowing but somehow compelling, the story truly evokes the feeling of tenacious hope, stretched to its thinnest but never failing. I wish the less-central characters had a little more dimension, and at times it feels like he's not sure how to speed up the pace of the story, but there's very little I'd change about this book. It's definitely worth a listen if you enjoy post-apocalypse narratives!
