About this audiobook

"Emily Pike Stewart’s narration brings the entire story to life. I sometimes had to remind
myself that this wasn’t a great true crime or wilderness podcast, but a novel."The Berkshire Eagle

In this captivating novel of suspense from the USA Today bestselling author of These Silent Woods, a wilderness guide must team up with the man who ruined her life years ago when the friend who introduced them goes missing.

Emlyn doesn't let herself think about the past.

How she and her best friend, Janessa, barely speak anymore. How Tyler, the love of her life, left her half dead on the side of the road three years ago.

Her new life is simple and safe. She lives alone in her Airstream trailer and works as a fishing and hunting guide in scenic Idaho. Her closest friends are the community's makeshift reverend and a handsome Forest Service ranger who took her in at her lowest.

But when Tyler shows up with the news that Janessa is missing, Emlyn is propelled back into the world she worked so hard to forget. Janessa has become a social media star, documenting her #vanlife adventures with her rugged boyfriend. She hasn't posted lately, though, and when Emlyn realizes the most recent photo doesn't match up with its caption, she reluctantly joins Tyler to find her old friend. As the two trace Janessa's path through miles of wild country, Emlyn can't deny the chemistry still crackling between them. But the deeper they press into the wilderness, the more she begins to suspect that a darker truth lies in the woods—and that Janessa isn't the only one in danger.

Poignant, suspenseful, and unforgettable, Kimi Cunningham Grant's THE NATURE OF DISAPPEARING explores what it takes to start over—and the cost of letting the past pull you back in.

A Macmillan Audio production from Minotaur Books.

3.5 ⭐ rounded to a 4. Is this a thriller? Is it contemporary fiction with a twist? Hmmm. I will say that I enjoyed the audio narration and would recommend it on audio. It made for a quick listen and gave me just enough speed to enjoy it. (I listened on 2x speed). Emlyn has abandonment issues after a youth of never feeling like she was enough for her father to stay, enough for her mom to function, etc. When she meets Janessa, she's in need of a friend that can take her under their wing. Janessa and Tyler have been friends forever and when Emlyn and Tyler hit it off, Janessa tells Emlyn to break it off. He's not good for her. (Of course she doesn't say why and her friends get together despite her protests.) Years later, Emlyn and Janessa are estranged and things went south with Tyler as well. When she sees Janessa on the news as a missing person, she knows she needs to help.

The story follows Emlyn, weaving a present and past timeline of Emlyn's relationships with Tyler and Janessa. Eager to discover what happened, I found myself enjoying the little details revealed throughout. The nature elements were delightful, and the "tracking" aspect was a fun addition. While the pacing was slow, Emily Pike Stewart's narration kept me engaged with her use of tones and inflections. However, I did feel the story lacked a sense of climax or excitement, leaving it a bit underwhelm
