About this audiobook

"As narrator, the terrific Laser, an actress and puppeteer, only enhances the swoon-worthy quirks and romance."—Vulture

A Today Show #ReadwithJenna Book Club Pick

A propulsive and uncommonly wise novel about one unexpected wedding guest and the surprising people who help her start anew.

It’s a beautiful day in Newport, Rhode Island, when Phoebe Stone arrives at the grand Cornwall Inn wearing a green dress and gold heels, not a bag in sight, alone. She's immediately mistaken by everyone in the lobby for one of the wedding people, but she’s actually the only guest at the Cornwall who isn’t here for the big event. Phoebe is here because she’s dreamed of coming for years—she hoped to shuck oysters and take sunset sails with her husband, only now she’s here without him, at rock bottom, and determined to have one last decadent splurge on herself. Meanwhile, the bride has accounted for every detail and every possible disaster the weekend might yield except for, well, Phoebe and Phoebe's plan—which makes it that much more surprising when the two women can’t stop confiding in each other.

In turns absurdly funny and devastatingly tender, Alison Espach’s The Wedding People is ultimately an incredibly nuanced and resonant look at the winding paths we can take to places we never imagined—and the chance encounters it sometimes takes to reroute us.

A Macmillan Audio production from Henry Holt & Company.

“𝙄 𝙟𝙪𝙨𝙩 𝙢𝙚𝙖𝙣, 𝙖 𝙨𝙩𝙤𝙧𝙮 𝙘𝙖𝙣 𝙗𝙚 𝙗𝙚𝙖𝙪𝙩𝙞𝙛𝙪𝙡 𝙣𝙤𝙩 𝙗𝙚𝙘𝙖𝙪𝙨𝙚 𝙤𝙛 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙬𝙖𝙮 𝙞𝙩 𝙚𝙣𝙙𝙨. 𝘽𝙪𝙩 𝙗𝙚𝙘𝙖𝙪𝙨𝙚 𝙤𝙛 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙬𝙖𝙮 𝙞𝙩’𝙨 𝙬𝙧𝙞𝙩𝙩𝙚𝙣.” I loved this book so much! It was so funny, heartwarming, and real. The premise definitely took me by surprise, but I loved that, and it was so different than anything I’ve read in quite some time. As briefly as possible (as to avoid any potential spoilers): Phoebe is the only non-wedding guest staying at this hotel for the week, but these “Wedding People” completely change everything for her. I absolutely loved getting to know all these characters. They felt so real, and I definitely think that was aided by the talents of Helen Laser’s narration. She was fantastic at delivering all the quippy conversations in such a way that I couldn’t help but laugh out loud. I really enjoyed the writing style. It flowed really well, moving the plot along seamlessly, while still incorporating a lot of introspection and humor. There was never a dull moment throughout. I was hooked from the beginning, and never knew what was going to happen next. I got a bit of 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘞𝘩𝘪𝘵𝘦 𝘓𝘰𝘵𝘶𝘴-vibes from the hotel location, the dark humor, and the characters, so if you enjoy that show, I think you would likely enjoy this book. There are definitely some potential triggers, so do be mindful of that before starting this book. (Feel free to reach out to me if you want to know more!) Thank you @macmillan.audio for providing me an ALC of this book. All opinions are my own. What this book is giving: ✅ Contemporary Adult Fiction ✅ Wedding Week ✅ Mental Health Rep ✅ Quippy Convos ✅ Dark Humor

I listened to the audio version of this book narrated by Helen Laser. I had never listened to anything narrated by Ms. Laser, but she did a fantastic job. Her voice was what I can only describe as crisp and clean. It added to the quips and the way she could "screech" for ticked off bride at times really leant a realism to the dialogue for me. This may be my favorite audiobook so far this year! This story was unique. Ms. Espach pulled me in and made me care about the characters. The main character, Phoebe, is ready to end her life because it has become insufferable. She encounters an entitled bridezilla, Lila. Their interactions are unbelievably just what each needs to work out the kinks in their respective lives and they are soon friends of sorts. There are all sorts of interesting side stories (is everyone named Jim) sprinkled throughout the book that just adds more shimmering jewels to a story that was already shining. Do yourself a favor and listen to this audiobook! It is definitely worth the time. Thanks to Macmillan Audio for this audiobook. All thoughts are my own.
