Rose Macaulay was a fascinating and influential British writer, known for her wit and intellect. A central theme of the novel is the clash between Western and Eastern cultures. As Laurie explores Turkey, she becomes enamoured with the country’s traditions, customs and history, leading her to question her own beliefs and values.
