Alec Ramsey is the survivor of a disastrous Antarctic expedition which abandoned his revered friend and leader of the party, Stephen Leeming. For forty years, in the security of academia, Ramsey has nurtured with guilt his doubts about this incident. Now Leeming's body is, against all odds, to be exhumed from the Antarctic icecap, and Ramsey must confront his obsession and decide whether he really did - or can continue to - survive at all.

Thomas (Tom) Keneally was born in Sydney in 1935. Of Irish descent, he trained for several years for the Catholic priesthood but did not take orders. He worked as a school teacher, clerk and drama teacher. In the mid-1960s Keneally embarked on an extraordinary career as a writer, with remarkable success in Australia and overseas. He has won many prestigious literary awards. He won the Booker Prize in 1982 and has won the Miles Franklin Award twice.

James Wright has been a professional actor for over 30 years. He was born in New Zealand and moved to Australia in 1972. He has had a successful career on stage, in film, television and as a voice artist for many commercials, corporate videos and documentaries. James has been narrating audiobooks for nearly 20 years. He has been short-listed in the TDK Audio Book of the Year awards twice and in 1997 he was awarded the Trish Trinick Prize for the Best-Narrated Audio Book of the Year.
