It was a cold winter night and Beth had just moved into her new apartment in the heart of the city. The place was old and musty, with creaky wooden floors and drafty windows that allowed the icy wind to whistle through the cracks. As she unpacked her belongings, she noticed a strange old puppet sitting in the corner of the room. It had a sinister look about it, with its cracked porcelain face twisted into a permanent scowl and its tattered clothes hanging limp from its lifeless limbs.
As she reached out to pick it up, she felt a chill run down her spine, as if an unseen force was warning her away from the disturbing object. The puppet seemed to be watching her, its dull glass eyes following her every move with an unnerving intensity. Beth shuddered, feeling the weight of those soulless eyes boring into her.
"Creepy old thing," she muttered, quickly setting it back down.
Trying to shake off the feeling of dread, Beth placed the puppet on a high shelf and went to bed, hoping that in the morning light it would seem less eerie. But as she lay in the drafty bedroom, she couldn't shake the feeling of being watched. She tossed and turned, the thin blankets providing little warmth against the chill that seemed to permeate the very walls.
Suddenly, she heard a faint whisper coming from the corner of the room where the puppet sat, almost imperceptible above the howling wind outside. It sounded like a child's voice, soft and pleading.
"Let me out," it said, the words seeming to slither into her mind. "I need to be free."
