About this audiobook

The Brave Athlete solves the thirteen most common mental conundrums athletes face in their everyday training and in races. You don't have one brain-you have three; your ancient Chimp brain that keeps you alive, your modern Professor brain that navigates the civilized world, and your Computer brain that accesses your memories and runs your habits (good and bad). They fight for control all the time and that's when bad things happen; you get crazy nervous before a race, you choke under pressure, you quit when the going gets tough, you make dumb mistakes, you worry about how you look. What if you could stop the thoughts and feelings you don't want? What if you could feel confident, suffer like a hero, and handle any stress? You can. The Brave Athlete from Dr. Simon Marshall and Lesley Paterson will help you take control of your brain so you can train harder, race faster, and better enjoy your sport. Dr. Marshall is a sport psychology expert who trains the brains of elite professional athletes. Paterson is a three-time world champion triathlete and coach. Together, they offer this innovative brain training guide that is the first to draw from both clinical science and real-world experience with athletes.

A marriage of study and action (literally). I enjoyed it thoroughly. It took a bit to go through and certainly, not everything applied to me, but there was a lot to work with. I have been able to stick with my fitness program because of the mindset training. I even set a new longterm goal that ls more than I've ever considered doing (marathon) yet somehow, more it doesn't seem impossible. I also checked out the book it based some of the theory on, The Chimp Paradox. It is also great and worth checking out.

Unashamedly targeting the endurance athlete, Simon and Lesley do a cracking job of distilling the neuroscience into usable theory and top it off with some strategies to actually use it. The potty mouth, the humour, the blend of English and Scottish accents with some American pronunciation for good measure belie the understanding it takes to make the technical accessible. Also some good strategies for having conversations around eating disorders too. All in all, well worth the time and money.

The female reader is difficult to understand and makes listening a chore.
