Charles Dickens┬аwas born in a little house in Landport, Portsea, England, on February 7, 1812. The second of eight children, he grew up in a family frequently beset by financial insecurity. When the family fortunes improved, Charles went back to school, after which he became an office boy, a freelance reporter, and finally an author. With┬аPickwick Papers┬а(1836тАУ37) he achieved immediate fame. In a few years he was easily the most popular and respected writer of his time. It has been estimated that one out of every ten persons in Victorian England was a Dickens reader.┬аOliver Twist┬а(1837),┬аNicholas Nickleby┬а(1838тАУ39), and┬аThe Old Curiosity Shop┬а(1840-41) were huge successes.┬аMartin Chuzzlewit┬а(1843тАУ44) was less so, but Dickens followed it with his unforgettable,┬аA Christmas Carol┬а(1843),┬аBleak House┬а(1852тАУ53),┬аHard Times┬а(1854), and┬аLittle Dorrit┬а(1855тАУ57), which┬аreveal his deepening concern for the injustices of British society.┬аA Tale of Two Cities┬а(1859),┬аGreat Expectations┬а(1860тАУ61), and┬аOur Mutual Friend┬а(1864тАУ65) complete his major works.
