About this audiobook

What if every patient received the kind of focused personal attention Dr. Kuhlman used with three U.S. Presidents? Kuhlman and Peach show how this level of care can be achieved now.

In Transformative Healthcare, Jeffrey Kuhlman, MD, and Daniel J. Peach unveil a step-by-step game plan to save millions of dollars and thousands of lives. How do they know it works? They’ve implemented it in several hospitals and seen dramatic results.

Dr. Kuhlman has spent his career emphasizing the merits of the patient-doctor relationship. Each one is unique. That’s been his approach to care, whether it's with U.S. Presidents or with the person who shows up in an emergency room on a Saturday evening. Daniel Peach is an expert on human performance and change principles, as evidenced in his work in the ever-changing world of security and in hospital administration.

Together, and through a series of trials and errors, Kuhlman and Peach have come up with logical solutions to the healthcare dilemma, one event at a time. The answers are not some distant concepts in the ether. They're right in front us. It just takes a method to make them actionable. Kuhlman and Peach have the method. They eagerly and clearly share it in this book.

The genesis of these transformative methods goes back to their experiences with chest-pain patients in emergency departments. By developing a quick five-phase HEART Score rather than defaulting to tests (expensive and oftentimes unnecessary), they saved $32 million annually in just chest-pain events ... in one hospital. Outpatient care doubled and admission rates dropped by half.

Since then, similar methods have been implemented for patients undergoing Coronary Artery Bypass Graft surgery, resulting in improved mortality and fewer readmissions. They've also developed a sepsis algorithm, which has resulted in 1,200 more patients every year living post-implementation.

About the author

Jeffrey Kuhlman served as a navy physician for 30 years, 16 years supporting the White House physician to Presidents Clinton, Bush, and Obama. As the director of the White House Medical Unit, White House physician, and senior flight surgeon for Marine One, Kuhlman was required to be no farther than two minutes from the president at all times. In this role, he gleaned personal lessons about the importance of individual, relational care. As physician to the president, Dr. Kuhlman coordinated comprehensive healthcare for the president and the first family, oversaw medical care for the vice president (and family) and for senior White House staff and Cabinet rank members. He was also responsible for emergency medical actions and advanced contingency planning, which necessitated the collaboration of the White House Medical Unit with the Secret Service protection details. Dr. Kuhlman provided guidance and advice on all joint service, interagency, and international matters for medical contingency planning and operations. He traveled to more than 90 countries to review their healthcare resources and protocols. His oversight even extended over force protection (preventive measures to mitigate hostile actions involving personnel, resources, facilities, and critical information), population health, and workplace health and safety programs for all workers and guests on the White House complex at home and abroad. His mantra: "No policy. No politics. Just trusted medical advice." Dr. Kuhlman is triple board-certified in aerospace, family, and occupational medicine. He's board-certified in medical management and a certified physician executive by the American Association of Physician Leaders and a certified professional in patient safety. His global health expertise includes the certificate in traveler health by the International Society of Travel Medicine. Currently, Dr. Kuhlman serves as chief quality and safety officer for America's largest Protestant not-for-profit healthcare system, AdventHealth, guiding quality, risk, safety, and transformation. Daniel J. Peach serves as director of clinical transformation at AdventHealth Orlando, America's largest hospital. Since 2002, Peach, a registered osteopath in the United Kingdom, has specialized in prevention, care, and the optimization of human performance for elite athletes. During his 26 years in executive leadership for an international fiber-optic telecommunications manufacturer, Peach directed teams tasked with solving challenges of the people, processes, and technology interfaces. His work has included sensitive international security issues, where the safety of frontline and executive personnel requires high-performing leadership and action in real time.
