Japanese Girls and Women

After a year in Tokyo, American teacher Alice Mabel Bacon (1858-1918) became the first author to explore Japan's class system, cultural history and moral framework through the stories of its women. Her 1891 book depicts a generation of women striving to reconcile traditional expectations with their newly Westernised education.

Alice M. Bacon was a private American scholar and keen social observer who resided for many years in Japan. She was the first Western woman to live in a Japanese household.
