About the author
James Daugherty (1889–1974) was a well established artist before becoming a noted author. He came into his own writing and illustrating books for young people, creating drawings for more than ninety books. Among his many works are Daniel Boone, a Newbery Medal winner, and Andy and the Lion, a Caldecott Medal runner-up.
