It's a good reference for various bits of trivia about subjects depicted in fantasy media, from how to depict horses as beings rather than just forms of unfeeling transport to how professionals can scale various rocky terrain. The book itself doesn't cover these topics in a thorough enough way to serve as one's main reference for depicting activities and settings believably, but there are useful sources listed at the end of most chapters for further study. Ultimately, it feels like this book is mostly for those who have a pathological fear of getting things wrong and alienating a minority of one's audience who are experts in their respective fields. If one is simply writing for pleasure without concern as to whether or not a horse in a story has the correct morphological characteristics for the environment or how quickly it would take to suffocate after a chest stabbing, this book is not required reading. Just a fun curiosity for those who like hearing how experts react to fiction.
