Darn it! The comparison I want to make about this book would one hundred percent give away the identity of who was behind everything. But this book is so well-written and the clues so carefully disguised, I refuse to ruin all of the author’s hard work. I loved following over Hawke’s shoulder as he tracked the puzzle pieces and fit them together. All the way to the end, I was still second-guessing my own theories about the mystery. And that ending? It was not at all what I was expecting.

law-enforcement, rural, small-town, friendship, suspense, red-herrings, relationship-issues, relationships, relatives, false-information, farming, sly-humor, missing-persons, murder, murder-investigation, Oregon, dogs***** Have you ever seen those intricately knitted landscape sweaters with a multiplicity of colors? Can you then imagine what a truly messy tangle the yarns would get into? That's how this story is. Hawke tries to follow each color (suspect and rationale) but gets tangled and has to try the next one. Too many of them are all too likely but there is far too little solid evidence. It might seem as if he is bumbling, but he has just never encountered this kind of sociopath before. The conclusion had me totally baffled! Terrific read and a fantastic series! Larry Gorman is great as narrator with his laid-back interpretation that only seems to emphasize points being made by the author.
