About this app

Sky Map is a hand-held planetarium for your Android device. Use it to identify stars, planets, nebulae and more. Originally developed as Google Sky Map, it has now been donated and open sourced.

Troubleshooting/FAQ

The Map doesn't move/points in the wrong place

Make sure you haven't switched into manual mode. Does your phone have a compass? If not, Sky Map cannot tell your orientation. Look it up here: http://www.gsmarena.com/

Try calibrating your compass by moving it in a figure of 8 motion or as described here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k1EPbAapaeI.

Are there any magnets or metal nearby that might interfere with the compass?

Try switching off "magnetic correction" (in settings) and see if that is more accurate.

Why is autolocation not supported for my phone?

In Android 6 the way permissions work has changed. You need to enable the location permission setting for Sky Map as described here: https://support.google.com/googleplay/answer/6270602?p=app_permissons_m

The Map is jittery

If you have a phone that lacks a gyro then some jitter is to be expected. Try adjusting the sensor speed and damping (in settings).

Do I need an internet connection?

No, but some functions (like entering your location manually) won't work without one. You'll have to use the GPS or enter a latitude and longitude instead.

A really good realtime star map, free and no ads. Works perfectly for everyone except die-hard pro astronomers who might prefer a paid, professional alternative. Definitely deserves a higher average review score. If you have issues with accuracy, it's really your device that needs calibration. The app is not at fault.

Really clever idea, well implemented. Allows you to hold your phone up in the direction of the stars, and helps identify the planets, stars, constellations and more. Probably depends on the individual phone, but it's not perfectly accurate with its placement so with using an anchor point like the moon to see how far out it is from accurate.

Over the years I've noticed that some phones can have sensors that can read as much as 25 degrees out. I guess it's not a priority for manufacturers. I have a few ideas in mind that might allow a user to set a correction but haven't implemented them yet.

I really love this app but it's not showing the correct view of the sky. It's like 1/4 off. Moon is in front of me but the app shows it way to the right. I know why, the app needs to be true North not magnetic North. Edit: there is no magnetic disable option, s24 and fold6 both have problems

You can try disabling the magnetic correction in the settings. Edit: there is - go to Sky Map Settings/Sensor Settings and disable "use magnetic correction". Still, it's more likely that the compass sensor in your phone just isn't particularly accurate.
